What are thermoplastic coatings?

2023/04/19

What are thermoplastic coatings?

We encounter thermoplastic coatings every day – often without even realizing it.

For example, when you open your refrigerator, those thick, sturdy refrigerator shelves have probably been coated with thermoplastic! But what exactly is a thermoplastic coating?

Thermoplastic coatings are made from various high molecular weight resins, and the characteristics of the coatings are determined by the properties of the resin used.

The most common resins are:

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Polyethylene (PE)
  • Polyamide (PA),
  • Copolymer

polypropylene and polyester-based coatings can also be found.

Thermoplastic coatings are incredibly
durable materials that melt and flow when heated.

They effectively regain their initial properties when cooled, making them an ideal choice for many applications. This means that you might need to develop a different mindset when thinking about thermoplastic coatings. Instead of thinking of a paint-like fluid, think more of a thick, flexible plastic film.

Made to give mild steel, aluminum & galvanized steel a hard-wearing & long-lasting finish, thermoplastic coatings are great for outdoor urban furniture such as fences and railings, as well as equipment and infrastructure in industrial plants. These materials are designed to withstand harsh conditions, such as acid rain and exposure to caustic chemicals. They also perform well in areas where heavy salting is present during the winter due to ice & snow, or in coastal towns. In some cases, these coatings don’t even require an additional primer in order to adhere well to metal substrates. Their cost-performance ratio provides great value for money, and they are straightforward to apply not needing complicated curing mechanisms.

A further advantage of thermoplastic coatings is their lack of micro-porosity. In other words, they do not leave any tiny holes where water and air could initiate the corrosion process on a substrate. This means that for many end uses, a single layer is sufficient to offer excellent protection.

Get the look you want with thermoplastic coatings

Thermoplastic coatings have a glossy appearance and are available in a wide range of colors. These products perform excellently in terms of both color and gloss retention, and they have a pleasant & smooth feel when touched.

Thermoplastic coatings are field repairable

Take, for example, the thermoplastic coating on a bench that has been chipped by wear and tear. It is possible to apply heat to the coating with a hot air gun so that it melts, flows, and fills in the damaged area. An alternative approach is to heat thermoplastic powder coating in a receptacle, apply it to the damaged area, then use a hot air gun to smooth out the coating.

Thermoplastics are a revolutionary coating that is both beautiful and functional. They are highly sought after for their ease of use, durability, and protective properties.
